Collector’s Corner: Lords of Chaos Blade Software’s Cult Strategy Classic
Every now and then, a box turns up at RetroGamerHeaven that makes us pause, not because it’s flashy or famous, but because it represents something special. This week, that honour goes to a dark fantasy tactical gem from 1990: Lords of Chaos for the Amstrad CPC. Developed by Julian Gollop, the legendary mind behind Chaos and X-COM,Lords of Chaos is a turn-based strategy game dripping with atmosphere. You play as a wizard, navigating otherworldly realms, summoning creatures, casting spells, and duelling rival sorcerers in tense tactical battles. While the game received releases across ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Amstrad CPC, the Amstrad 3" disk version is one of the harder variants to find today, especially in its original box. This week’s find includes: There’s even a vintage handwritten label on the disk, which we’ve left in place, a subtle reminder that this copy has lived a life, probably passed around among enthusiasts who appreciated its tactical depth long before “strategy RPG” was a household genre. Though not mainstream-famous, Lords of Chaos commands attention in the right circles: This version is perfect for collectors looking to complete an Amstrad disk collection or those interested in the evolution of tactical fantasy games. Julian Gollop’s influence didn’t stop here, Lords of Chaos laid the groundwork for later genre-defining titles like X-COM: UFO Defense, and eventually led to the creation of Phoenix Point decades later. This game is part of that lineage. We’ve listed this boxed Amstrad version in our store under the retro PC section. It may be untested, but it’s a rare piece of strategy gaming history and a brilliant addition to any collection. Stay tuned for more gems from gaming’s shadowy corners, and if you’ve got an Amstrad tale of your own, we’d love to hear it. Until next time,What Is Lords of Chaos?
